What is Carrom?

Carrom is a classic tabletop game which resembles snooker or billiards, and also the more modern games of subbuteo and air hockey. Carrom is played by propelling discs with the fingers with the aim of potting them into one of four corner pockets on a wooden playing board.

Rules for Carrom

Players take turns to play. A turn consists of one or more strikes. A player wins by pocketing all of the pieces of their chosen colour first. However, neither player can win until one or other player has "covered the Queen". To cover the Queen, a player must pocket one of her own pieces immediately after pocketing the Queen. If the Queen is pocketed but not covered, the Queen is returned to the board. Both players normally try to cover the Queen in addition to trying to win the game because a player who wins and also covers the Queen receives bonus points.

Carrom Board Rules are:

  • For the very first turn, the player is allowed three attempts to "break" i.e. disturb the central group of counters
  • It doesn't matter which piece the striker hits first and it doesn't matter if the striker hits no pieces.
  • If the striker pockets the Queen and/or one or more pieces of her own colour, the player retrieves the striker and takes another strike.
  • If the player pockets no pieces or commits a foul, the turn finishes.
  • A player may only pocket and cover the Queen if that player has already pocketed at least one piece of that player's colour.
  • Should a player pocket the Queen before being permitted to cover it, the turn continues but the Queen is returned to the centre at the end of the turn.
  • If a player pockets the Queen and one of her own pieces in the same turn, this counts and that player has covered the Queen. Such a player must have already pocketed at least one piece in order to cover the Queen as per normal.
  • When a player pockets the Queen but does not cover it, the Queen is returned as near as possible to the centre circle by the opponent.

What are Types of Carrom Games played in India?

Family Point Carrom

The game of Carrom originated as a family game, hence the first variant is obviously related to how people play the game of Carrom at their homes. The main objective of this variant is to enjoy and spend some quality time with the family. Here there is no stoppage on which color disks you need to pocket, for each black disk pocketed the player gets 5 points, 10 for the white, and queen earns 25 points for the player provided if it is covered. The highest number of point winners ultimately wins the carrom board game. This game can be played individually or also in pairs as well.

Point Carrom

This is quite similar to the family point carrom but over here both the black and white disks will earn you 1 point each, whereas after covering the queen it will earn you 3 points. The player who reaches the 25 points mark is declared the winner and if there is no clear winner then the highest number of point winners will be declared as the winner. In case of a tie, a tiebreaker is played where players are allowed to choose two different numbers of disks and they need to pocket them only on rebounds.

Professional Carrom

These carrom board rules are formed by the ICF and for the national and international Carrom championships, these carrom rules are used. As per these rules, every Carrom game consists of 29 points. Each player is assigned with a color of disks and they have to pocket the assigned color disks only. The players can’t pocket the queen before the first disk is pocketed and after the last disk is pocketed. As per normal rules over here too the queen must be duly covered. The queen and its cover can’t be pocketed in the same pocket. The first person who pockets all of his designated color disks is declared the winner.

What are the Common Terms used in Carrom?

  • Queen - It is a red colored carrom coin placed at the center of the board at the beginning of the game.
  • Foul − Any wrong strike by the player is considered a foul. She/he has to miss their turn and stand a penalty of one carrom coin.
  • Break − The first strike on the board is called a break.
  • Push − A sudden jerk of the board while playing is called push. It is a kind of foul.
  • Due − A penalty term, when the player commits a foul and places his carrom coins in the center.
  • Penalty − A penalty is different from foul and this is applicable when a player violates the laws of carrom.
  • Covering − It means pocketing a carrom coin as cover for the queen.
  • Thumbing − Any proper strike played with the thumb is called thumbing.
  • White slam - It means pocketing all white carrom coins with or without queen on first strike or turn.
  • Black slam - It means pocketing all black carrom coins with or without queen in the first turn.

Tips to win a Carrom Board Games

1. If you are striking first, ensure that you hit the central coins, if you blank, then your turn is forfeited to the opponent.

2. Always remember to pocket the queen and give it cover with pocketing the last of your coins. If you pocket all your coins first, without pocketing the queen it doesn’t work.

3. Do not place the striker outside the demarcated lines, that will result in a foul & the turn will go to your opponent.

4. Always strike with decent power, otherwise you will not pocket the coins and the turn will be forfeited.

5. Sometimes know how to block other people from pocketing their own coins, if you have more coins remaining. By blocking their line of shot with your own coins.
