  • What are the basics of Indian Rummy?

  • Indian Rummy or 13 Card Rummy game can be played by a minimum of two players and a maximum of six players. 1 deck of cards is required in 2 player tables and 2 decks of cards are required in 6 player tables. Each player has to, in turn, draw a card either from an open card deck or the closed card deck, and discard one card to the open deck. • What are the common terms used in Rummy?

  • Table: It is the place where you play rummy. Every rummy table can sit two to six players in a game
Deck of cards: A single deck of cards has 52 cards and a printed joker. These cards are divided into 4 sets of 13 cards from 2 to 10 and face value cards like A, K, Q, J in 4 different suits. There are 4 suits in a deck – Clubs, Hearts, Spades & Diamonds.
Sorting: Sorting of cards are done at the start of each game. Sorting is arranging your cards in a manner that it helps you form your sets and sequences and avoiding the mixing of cards. Once you get your cards, hit the Sort button and start playing.
Points in Rummy: In rummy, Ace, Jack, Queen and King each have 10 points. The remaining cards have a value equal to their face value. This is how the cards rank in ascending orders – Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen and King.
Joker & Wild Card: There is one printed joker in every deck. Once the cards are distributed amongst the players, a wild card is selected at random. Both joker and wild card serve the same purpose. A joker/wildcard is used to replace the desired card to form a set or impure sequence. In case the open joker is the printed joker, then all Aces are considered as wild card jokers. All these cards count to zero points at the end of the game. So, the more number of such cards you get the better it is.
Drop: You can choose to drop a game at any point of time. You are charged a Penalty every time you drop. Players who drop out at the beginning of the game, also known as First Drop, will get 20 points. Those players who make a Middle Drop or choose to leave the game before the game show is called by any player will get 40 points. Any player who does not meld any cards when a show is called and instead opts to leave the game gets 80 points, this is known as a Full Count.
Sequence: A sequence is a group of 3 or more cards of the same suit arranged in a consecutive order.
Pure Sequence: Any sequence without a joker becomes a pure sequence. Remember if a wild card joker sits in a proper sequence of the same suit it will be a pure sequence.
Impure Sequence: A sequence with one or more Joker cards is called an Impure sequence.
Set: A set is a group of 3 or 4 cards of different suits but of the same value. One can use any kind of joker (wild or printed) to replace any card in the set.
