5 Most Successful ODI Captains

ODI cricket is one of the most exciting formats of the game and has seen plenty of players grow into absolute legends. There have been many amazing captains across different nations who have raised theirs and their country’s games to the highest level.

Who are the Top 5 Most Successful ODI Captains in Cricket Ever?

Captaining a squad for ODIs is not an easy task, but these five captains have shown us that success is a habit. Here are the five most successful ODI captains of all time –

1. Stephen Fleming

The stylish New Zealand batsman was one of their country’s most successful captains, as he emerged victorious in 98 of the 218 ODIs he led his nation in. He led the Black Caps to three WC and progressed to the semis of two of them before losing out.

He was also an important opening batsman for the team and has played many memorable knocks against quality opposition over the years.

2. Hansie Cronje

The late Hansie Cronje was regarded as an astute captain and an excellent all-rounder who led his team to many victories. He was their youngest captain when he was asked to take the mantle in the 1994-95 tour of Australia.

His composed approach to captaining coupled with his contributions with both the bat and ball made him a fine leader in all aspects. His 99 ODI victories make him the fourth most successful captain in the format and he captained his team for 138 ODIs in total.

3. Allan Border

The legendary all-rounder, Allan Border was made the captain when the entire Australian team was in decline in the mid-80s. He helped revive their fortunes with some astute decision-making and all-round ability despite being a reluctant leader.

Allan Border made Australia one of the strongest teams in the 90s and led them in 178 ODIs, second only behind Ricky Ponting for the nation. He won a total of 107 matches and led them to victory in two World Cups, winning one as well.

4. MS Dhoni

India’s most successful captain and their greatest wicket-keeper ever, MS Dhoni was the only captain to win three ICC tournaments. From the World T20 in 2007, to the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013, Dhoni led from the front as India had a magnificent run for nearly 7 years under him.

He won 110 ODIs as captain and scored 6,633 runs as well. His average of 53.92 is the highest for any captain who has at least 1,000 runs in ODIs. His finishing and big-hitting ability ensured he went down as a legend of the game.

5. Ricky Ponting

The top-spot for the most successful ODI captain goes to Australian legend Ricky Ponting. He took over the captaincy in 2002 and went on a 34-game winning streak once. He led them to two successful back-to-back titles as captain and also went on to win 165 games in total, making him the highest in the history of the format.
