Types of Poker Games

When people think of poker, Texas Hold’em is probably the first version they have in mind. This is certainly the most popular form of poker at the moment, but there are several other types of the poker game that should be overlooked. There’s Omaha, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Five Card Draw to name just a few. There are even variants which combine a number of different games into one, such as H.O.R.S.E. and 10 Game Mix.

Poker Variations

The three main types of poker games are:

Draw Poker

Games in this category are those in which players are dealt hands that are hidden from their opponents and players can try to improve their hands by replacing a certain number of cards. Of the variants that we’ve listed above, Five Card Draw Poker and Badugi fall into this category.

Stud Poker

Stud games involve players being dealt hands that contain a combination of hidden and exposed cards, so their opponents have some information about what they might have. Seven Card Stud and Razz are two examples of stud games.

Community Card Poker

This category of games is for those who use community cards or shared cards. Players are dealt hidden cards and use them in combination with the community cards to form their hands. Two very popular games in this category are Texas Hold’em and Omaha.

Top Poker Game Types

The most common types of poker game variations are:

Texas Hold ‘em Poker

Texas Holdem is one of a number of poker games called “community” poker games. In a community poker game, each player receives a certain number of poker cards, and each player also shares several community cards which are dealt in the middle of the table. In this specific game, you get 2 cards face down, and 5 cards are spread out in the middle of the table. You can use any combination of the 2 cards in your hand and the 5 cards on the board in order to create the best possible 5 card poker hand. Rounds of betting take place during certain parts of the deal, which happen in stages, and the player who hasn’t folded and has the best hand at the end wins the money in the pot.

Omaha High

The Omaha hold ’em is a community card poker game similar to Texas hold ’em, where each player is dealt four cards and must make their best hand using exactly two of them, plus exactly three of the five community cards.

Omaha Hi/Lo

Omaha Hi/Lo is very similar to Omaha High and it can also be referred to as Eight or Better or Omaha/8. The interesting aspect of this variant is that players have to form TWO hands with their hole cards and the community cards: a high hand and a low hand. The goal is to have the highest high hand and the lowest low hand. Confusing, but fun!

Seven Card Stud

Seven card stud was the most popular form of poker before Texas Holdem burst onto the scene in the early 2000s. Some argue that Holdem started taking over for stud in the 1970s, and it did gain in popularity because the main event of the World Series of Poker used Texas Holdem. But 7 card stud still had a strong following through the 1980s and 1990s. Stud is a strategically challenging game where partial information dictates play. Unlike Texas Holdem or Omaha, in a seven-card stud, there are no community cards except in one rare circumstance which I’ve covered below and each player will receive seven cards in order to make their best five-card poker hand.

Razz

Razz is a form of stud poker that is similar to seven-card stud. The only difference is that razz is a low ball game instead of playing for the best high hand and you’ll find some slight differences in how the action is decided.

Deuce to Seven Triple Draw

Deuce to Seven Triple Draw is another game where the goal is to have the lowest-ranked hand. It’s usually a pretty crazy game that’s filled with a lot of action, but it’s relatively easy to learn and there isn’t a huge amount of poker strategies involved. This is a game that can provide a fun change of pace to try something different.

What are the types of Mixed Poker Games?

Mixed poker games can be a great deal of fun but they can also be very confusing for some players. They basically combine different variants into a single game. Players play one hand (or a number of hands) of one variant and then play a number of hands of another variant. You need to concentrate hard when playing these games! The following are some of the more popular formats of this type.

  1. H.O.R.S.E
  2. H.O.S.E
  3. Hold’em Mixed
  4. 10 Game Mix
  5. 8 Game Mixed
  6. Omaha Hi/Lo Mixed
